GENDER AND SLAVERY

The concept of gender dynamics is often superimposed against many topics. The sector of slavery is not an exception. An age-old debate has been built around determining the sex that bore the brunt of the slave age.

Statistics dictate a massive number of women and children were subject to this devastating experience. This is primarily owing to physical vulnerability.

There are many aspects through which this topic can be examined. In terms of roles played, the women seemed to be left to a vast majority of domestic duties. This often extended to demeaning expectations of the sexual nature from slave owners. The issue of gender also arises in the area of leadership and the fight for freedom.

The walk to liberation was a long and tough one. The likes of Harriet Tubman spearheaded this. She was an activist and is renowned as one of those who spurred her fellow slaves to action.
